May/June, 2009 President's Report

President's Corner >>

As the first quarter of 2009 ends, I am proud of the level of productivity our leadership has provided.  From the Administrative office to the Executive Committee to the twenty-two Regional Board of Directors, California has been impacted in a positive manner.  The leadership of CAADAC is more zealous and passionate than ever before in regards to meeting the needs of our membership.  It was very exciting to hear reports at our recent EC/BOD meetings on April 24-26th in Sacramento from our current conference committee, CCB Chair Jim Sellars, Legislative Co-Chairs Bob Tyler and Warren Daniels, CFAAP Chair Warren Daniels, Treasurer Tish Hughes, Secretary John Madsen, PAC Chair & President-Elect Tom Gorham and the “backbone” of our association, Executive Director Rhonda Messamore.  Our credibility, reputation and professionalism are a result of the hard work that these leaders put forth daily.

The recent scare tactics initiated by other stakeholders related to SB 707 only gave way for our leadership to become even more cohesive in strategizing a plan to educate you- our membership by keeping you well-informed throughout the legislative process.  I was pleased to receive the responses from my letter which allowed me to hear your true concerns and valid points.  I am appreciative of both affirmations and criticisms. It was exciting to hear that SB 707 (Desaulnier) passed the Senate Health committee on April 29, 2009.  Keep in mind, as our lobbyist, Louie Brown stated, “This is the first inning of a nine inning game.”

As with any legislative effort, there are many with different opinions.  It is important that we as CAADAC members continue to support ADP in their effort to standardize our industry in California and raise the level for counselor competency, consumer protection, and workforce development. CAADAC leadership will continue to take the stance, support if amended, without compromising our integrity, standards and vision. Additionally, we have you in our foremost thoughts when working on legislative matters.

Allow me if you will to share some inspiring words from Mother Teresa:

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;  succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; be good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you have anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.

In Service,

Joe
