November/December, President's Report |

Well, the holidays are right around the corner! I hope you and your family are prosperous in health as well as financial stability. The holidays always cause me to reflect back to my values, traditions, and beliefs which include the importance of faith, family, friends, apple cider, and tamales. Now those are not necessarily in order, but if you know me well, you can figure out how I would prioritize the list!
I want to express my appreciation to all who attended the annual CAADAC conference in October in Rancho Cordova, Ca. I believe this year’s conference was perhaps the most diverse and most successful thus far. This could not have been accomplished without the hard work of our conference committee, exhibitors, presenters, sponsors, CAADAC Board members, Executive Board members, CAADAC staff, and our Executive Director, Rhonda Messamore. I have received nothing but positive feedback via phone calls, e-mail, and face-to-face discussions regarding the great work put in to this year’s conference.
Who could forget our Pre-Conference presenter Lee Mun-Wah! The integration of a thought-provoking lecture and an activity which promoted transparency, made this pre-conference one to be remembered. Many of you commented on being pleased with the diversity of our multicultural panel on the last day. I would like to send a special thank you to ADP Director, Rene Zito, for supporting our conference with her guest appearance as well as providing us with an update on state issues.
The annual PAC fundraiser was well attended as President and CEO of CRC Health Group, Dr. Barry Karlin, spoke on “Leadership”. Sunday’s plenary speaker, David J. Sperling showed his film, “Drunk in Public” which chronicled the past 15 years of the life of Mark David Allen, who had been arrested 478 times. The film truly exposed the systemic holes within our mental health and substance abuse programs.
I am glad I was able to purchase this film for educational purposes.
In closing, may you all this coming season remember to take care of yourself and cherish those around you. Remember to keep your CAADAC leadership in your thoughts as we prepare for the upcoming legislative season in January 2010. I read somewhere that there are three kinds of people: those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what the heck happened. I believe that our members are industry leaders and WE CHOOSE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
Respectfully,
Joe
